Although not all of these are essentials to the online buying process, these are some things that you have to consider, and should look for, when you are making a purchase online. Regardless of what you are buying, you have to know you are buying with a reliable source, and you have to know you can trust the seller.
Secure Site
The first thing to make sure of is that the site is secure, you can easily check this on the address bar (http vs https:// for secure). This is important as you are entering your billing and mailing address, name, phone number, payment information, and other information.
Postage
You have to consider postage rates. From where it is shipping, the size of the package, how long it will take, and whether you are paying or the seller is paying (or whether it will be split).
Page Rank
The more well known the site (like amazon, ebay, overstock, etc), the higher they rank. Although this is not critical to buying, it might help you find lower rates, more availability, or more product selection for the items you are shopping for.
Reviews
If you want to buy from a reliable seller, you should read reviews about them. Using search engine reviews by other buyers, and learning about the entire transaction process you can expect, is one of the easiest ways to learn about what you can expect when shopping with an online retailer.
Shopping Basket
This is a great feature if you are a repeat shopper, or if you do not want to check out right away. Being able to create an account, or have the site store the items, and give you future suggestions is something to look for when choosing an online site to shop with.
Vouchers
Although this is another non essential, visiting voucher and coupon sites, to see if you can find deals for the online sites you want to shop with, is another way to save, and get the best deals on items you are buying.
Contact
If the website you are shopping with has an easy to find physical address, phone number, email, and other contact information, clearly stated, and in a place you can easily locate it on the page, you can be rest assured that you are shopping with a safe and secure site, and that they are a reliable online retailer for you to purchase from.
Customer Support
Whether it is a question about sizing, or delivery dates, you have to shop with sites that allow you to get answers to questions. Whether they offer live chat online, contact over the phone, email, or all of these features, the more customer contact and support there is, the more reliable the online vendor is going to be for consumers to purchase with.
It does not matter what you are buying, or how much you want to spend, considering these tips will help you find a reputable and reliable online vendor to make your purchases with.

The one thing I always worry about is the security aspect. Entering your credit card directly on some websites can be sketchy, so I always make sure they have a PayPal feature. If they don’t have PayPal, I will only shop there if they have a trusted shopping cart like GoDaddy’s eCommerce script or e-Junkie. There have been too many cases where companies are getting hacked and credit card numbers being leaked. Even if you buy something from a website in March and they get hacked in December of that same year, your credit card numbers can still be stolen.
That’s a great point, Ian. Thanks for stopping by and sharing this insight.
