The Principle of the Path By Andy Stanley

September 21st, 2011

In his latest book, Andy Stanley proposes that while there are several paths one can take in life, it is up to each of us to choose the path that will take us from where we are to where we want to be.  Stanley discusses at length the fact that, throughout life, we will come to many “forks-in-the-road” and that the choices we make at these crossroads ultimately comprise the fabric of our lives.

Living Life in the Zone by Kyle Rote, Jr and Dr Joe Pettigrew

June 24th, 2010

Love. Marriage. Family. Faith. Friends. Work.

How do you know you are living life in the zone?

This is the question posited by this book.

The answer lies within you.

Living Life in the Zone is a 40-day excursion into a man’s life.  But it is also more than that.  It is a journey into a man’s heart and mind.

The authors clearly communicate the truths of “living life” in the zone in a way that is both engaging and interesting.  I especially like the systematic setup for each day’s reading.  The authors seamlessly move the reader from idea (the coach’s corner) to thought organization (the game plan) to action (time out and daily assignment).  By providing more than simple ideology, and giving the reader something tangible to do each day, this book hits a grand slam in the practicality category.  The sports theme and references don’t hurt either.  This is definitely a book targeted toward men and the things they love — including sports.

After 40 days of reading this book, the reader will be much better prepared to live life the way God intended as it relates to family, friends, and faith.

I definitely recommend this book.

Primal By Mark Batterson

December 22nd, 2009

Several weeks ago I was selected purely at random (and certainly through no merit of my own) to receive a free copy of Mark Batterson‘s new book Primal. The exchange was simple — I get the book in advance, read it, and then post a review here, on my blog. So here goes.

If you are looking for a way to start 2010 on the right foot by deepening your relationship with God, then this book is for you. Batterson masterfully weaves his spot on anecdotes with God’s unchanging truth. Any Christian reader will find Primal to be fascinating, enjoyable, and easy to read.

Batterson’s challenge is easy to discern — rediscover basic, or “primal,” Christianity as found in the Great Commandment, which is to love God with all one’s heart, soul, mind, and strength. By doing so, Batterson purports, one will gain an expanded knowledge of and appreciation for the love of God, as well as a reformed perspective of the Christian faith.

I highly recommend Primal as a good read for all Christians.
