Timeless Blog Posts That Generate Blog Traffic

January 18th, 2011

I’ve heard it said before that the key to generating blog traffic is to write blog posts that are timeless.  Apparently writing about topics that are universally searched for and interesting will send more traffic to my blog.

However, it never ceases to amaze me (although it should) to see one or two of my blog posts continue to generate traffic in spite of when they were written.

For example, the last post I wrote was nearly two weeks ago (my apologies for that) and it was on the topic of Keeping the Faith in 2011.

Since that time, I have continued to watch my blog traffic with great interest and overwhelmingly the one post that has received the most traffic, hits, views, and clicks has been the post I wrote about getting more free space on DropBox.  And right now, the post that is following in at a close second is the end of the year post that ranked that post at #2.

Seth Godin even included timeless blog posts on his list of “How to get traffic for your blog.”

What do you think about timeless blog posts?  What trends have you noticed on your own blog?

Thank you so much for reading my humble musings and ramblings here at Footsteps of Faith. If you like this blog, would you consider sharing it on Twitter, Facebook, or your blog? Top Post #1: The Devil is in the Details

January 1st, 2011

Leading up to January 1, 2011, I will be counting down the top 10 posts of 2010, as recorded by the WordPress site stats here on Footsteps of Faith.  The #1 most popular post was The Devil is in the Details and was originally published October 3, 2010.

Pastors, have you ever had one of those Sundays when everything just seems to go right?  Well today was one of those days at First Baptist Church of Ellenton.  Not that things don’t go right every Sunday, but today things just seemed extra good.  God’s presence was immediately and abundantly obvious.  The worship was wonderful.  The preaching was pointed.  Everything just seemed to click.

Our church has worship at 9am and then Sunday School at 10:30, with a fellowship time in between featuring the best coffee and donuts in all of Manatee county.  Ok, maybe it’s just the sweet fellowship with other Christians that makes the coffee and donuts seem so great.

Then the moment that every pastor dreads hit me like a wave of cold water to the face…

Top Post #2: Get More Free Space with DropBox

January 1st, 2011

Leading up to January 1, 2011, I will be counting down the top 10 posts of 2010, as recorded by the WordPress site stats here on Footsteps of Faith.  The 2nd most popular post was Get More Free Space with DropBox and was originally published November 22, 2010.

There is a post today over at ChurchCrunch outlining how to get nearly 1GB of extra free space on DropBox.  It’s actually very simple, and if you follow their six simple steps, you can earn 768MB of extra free space (6 steps, 128MB per step).

However, what I think is even way cooler about DropBox, is that for each person you refer that signs up, you each get an extra 250MB of free space.  This happened to me right after I completed the tasks above!

Top Post #3: National Unfriend Day: Why and How to Cut the “Friend Fat”

December 31st, 2010

Leading up to January 1, 2011, I will be counting down the top 10 posts of 2010, as recorded by the WordPress site stats here on Footsteps of Faith.  The 3rd most popular post was National Unfriend Day: Why and How to Cut the “Friend Fat” and was originally published November 17, 2010.

In reading through the Google Trends today, I learned for the first time that Jimmy Kimmel has declared November 17 “National Unfriend Day.” Jimmy wants you to make the time and take the opportunity to go to your Facebook page and pare down your friend list.

Top Post #4: 3 Characteristics of a Leader

December 31st, 2010

Leading up to January 1, 2011, I will be counting down the top 10 posts of 2010, as recorded by the WordPress site stats here on Footsteps of Faith.  The 4th most popular post was 3 Characteristics of a Leader and was originally published September 22, 2010.

lead·er
–noun
1. a person or thing that leads. (DOH! Really?)
2. a guiding or directing head, as of an army, movement, or group.

Leaders are generally charged with having one eye to the future, while keeping the other eye in the present. Not an easy task. Therefore, I would like to share with you three characteristics that I believe are essential for every great leader.
